Keeping Your Home Clean When Living with Pets

Keeping a House with Pets Clean

While pets are a major source of joy, they can also leave messes in your home. Here’s how to keep your home clean when you have pets!

Furry family members can bring all kinds of joy and comfort to your daily life, but they can also come with some serious messes. Dander, hair, dust, tracked in dirt, and errant stuffing from a well-thrashed toy are all likely to become a regular part of your day. Cleaning up after your pets doesn’t need to be difficult. If you’re armed with knowledge and the right tools, your home will be just as clean and odor free as ever.

No More Wet Dog Smell

Even when they’re often groomed dogs can have a particular funk; cats too if we’re being honest. But these less than lovely scents don’t have to be pervasive in your home. With the weather getting warmer one of the first steps to odor prevention is air circulation; keep those windows open. For set-in scents, like those that can lodge in your carpets and upholstery, there are a variety of cleaning products that can help. Baking soda mixed with a few drops of geranium essential oil can be used as an easy and treatment to sprinkle on any fabrics before vacuuming off to remove odors. Enzyme treatments and general carpet cleaners can help as well.

Have The Right Tools

When you have a pet, there is a wide range of cleaning tools you will want to have on hand. First and foremost, a powerful vacuum, preferably with a HEPA air filter. Being able to suck up all of the dirt is critical to keeping your home clean. Lint rollers and handheld vacuums for nooks and crannies are also useful.

Wash Soft Items Often

Fabric-based dog toys, beds, and soft collars and leashes can all be washed in a washing machine and dryer regularly. Not only will this help keep odors at bay, but it can help ensure that all of your pet’s things last a long time and don’t cause health issues for you or them. Wet, well-loved toys can often be a breeding ground for bacteria that can harm you and them!

Stay Proactive

Vacuuming and sweeping up hair regularly are essential steps to ensuring your home stays clean, but there are a few more things you can do. If your home has a central air system, make sure that the filters are replaced regularly to keep pet hair and dander out of the system. Last but not least, make sure your pets are groomed regularly. Brushing out loose hair and giving regular baths is just as good for their health as it is your home’s cleanliness.
