Top Tips for Getting Your Home Cleaned Up Before You Move

Top Tips for Getting Your Home Cleaned Up Before You Move

If you’re moving from a home you own, cleaning is an important courtesy, but it doesn’t have the same importance as cleaning a rental.

Moving can be a hassle, and many things can slip through the cracks including move out cleaning. If you’re moving out of a rented unit, in particular, doing a thorough clean can help ensure that you receive your security deposit back. If you’re moving from a home you own, cleaning is an important courtesy, but it doesn’t have the same importance as cleaning a rental. While several factors may affect whether or not you get your security deposit back, always ensure that these following items are cleaned and taken care of.

WALLS

Start by removing any nails, thumbtacks, or tape strips, and then take a look at the damage. If any scuff marks can be removed using a paint-safe method try to clean the walls. You may try a wall scuff removal tool, or if the paint on the walls is high-gloss, you might be able to remove any scuffs using a cloth and warm soapy water. Please note that if the paint does not have a gloss, it may not be able to wash. If there are any holes, you may want to patch any larger ones with a small amount of spackle. If you have access to the paint used in the home, slight touch-ups may be a good idea.

STOVE

One of the most forgotten cleaning tasks is the stove and oven. Start by running a cleaning cycle of your oven. While that is going, make sure to scrub the top, exposed sides, and grates to ensure that no residue or dirt remains. When the cleaning cycle has finished, wipe out the entire and ensure that no food waste remains on the grates.

TRASH

Always be sure to remove all garbage from your home before you leave. Not only can this create a hazard if left for too long, but the resulting bacteria and odor may mean that the owner has to do the additional cleaning before the next tenants arrive.

FLOORS

Sweep, mop, and vacuum all of the rooms thoroughly, this is especially important if you had pets. If possible, run a wet cleaner on any carpeted areas to ensure that no odors or stains remain. For hardwood floors, using a polishing cleaner will help leave the floors looking better than when you moved in.
