Why Do We Clean Our Homes in the Spring?

Spring cleaning

Get your home ready for the new season with Ivete’s Spring Cleanin’.

Have you ever stopped to wonder why your mother and grandmother always pestered you about wasting a whole weekend to clean your already clean house? Well, spring cleaning isn’t just something your family does or even your neighbors. Spring cleaning has been going on for thousands of years in many different cultures. So let’s take a moment to explore where else spring cleaning is done.

The Jews, the Iranians, and the Chinese

The custom of “Passover” is a festival celebrated by Jewish communities to commemorate the liberation of the Israelites from the Egyptians. This celebration lasts for eight days in the early spring. In preparation for this festival, Jewish households will clean their homes from top to bottom in order to get rid of all leavened bread. Having leavened bread in the home is considered an affront to the culture and could even be considered an insult to God. So the people of the home clean it from top to bottom to avoid this insult. The Iranian ritual of “khaneh takani,” translated into “shaking the house,” is actually the two weeks preceding “Now Rouz”, the new year. During khaneh takani, the Iranians clean the entire house including rugs, drapes, knick-knacks, floors, and ceilings. New clothes are also worn and fresh flowers are brought inside to renew the home’s vibrancy. Once the house is shaken out, the new year can arrive. The Chinese also clean their homes in anticipation of the New Year, which is celebrated in Late-January or February. They clean their homes to remove bad luck and misfortune from the old year and to welcome good fortune into the home for the new year.
