4 Easily-Avoidable Kitchen Cleaning Mistakes

4 Easily-Avoidable Kitchen Cleaning Mistakes

You may be making some common kitchen cleaning mistakes without even realizing it.

The kitchen is known as the heart of the home for a reason–chances are, you use your kitchen every single day, and cooking is a messy task. But is your kitchen cleaning routine effective enough to prevent the spread of disease-causing germs and bacteria? You may be making some common kitchen cleaning mistakes without even realizing it. Here are 4 kitchen cleaning mistakes to avoid to help you keep your kitchen cleaner.

Using Dirty Sponges

When is the last time you replaced your sponges? If you’re grabbing the same sponge time and again to clean up counter spills, dishes, the stovetop, and more, you could be spreading bacteria all around your kitchen. You want to make sure your countertops are deeply cleaned in order to make sure your kitchen stays clean longer, so be sure to replace your sponges when needed. To remove bacteria that can cause foodborne illness from a sponge quickly, try microwaving it for 2 minutes.

Using a Dirty Dishwasher

It’s easy to forget that your dishwasher can get dirty, too. After all, your dishwasher cleans your dishes day after day, and they appear to come out perfectly clean. But the machine itself should be cleaned out regularly. Since the edges and seals of the dishwasher can be a breeding ground for mold and mildew, the machine can wind up leaving a stubborn odor in your kitchen. Combat this on a monthly basis by running some white vinegar through your empty dishwasher and wiping down the seals with a bleach cleaner.

Cleaning From the Bottom Up

Your cleaning routine may need some adjusting if you start with lower projects, like mopping the floors, before cleaning the countertops higher up. When you start from the top, with tasks like dusting ceiling fans and move down to do the floors last, you won’t wind up causing messes as you go on the things you’ve already cleaned.

Not Cleaning Your Trash Can

You take out your trash regularly, but one commonly overlooked cleaning task is actually cleaning the garbage can itself. Buildup left in the trash can by leaks in the trash bag or messy food waste can cause stubborn odors and draw pests. This is easily avoidable–be sure to clean out your trash can regularly to keep your kitchen clean and sanitary.
